USP 800 in the Long Term Care Setting

Why is USP 800 important? And how can LTC facilities set themselves up for success within the current regulatory environment? This session provides a framework for answering those questions, suggesting some straightforward steps LTC facilities can take right now to both protect staff while they handle hazardous drugs and comply with the requirements of USP 800.

Objectives:

  • Understand which regulatory agencies have a role in monitoring and enforcing compliance to the USP 800 standard and how that is likely to evolve over time.
  • Identify the key components of USP 800 and how to start and maintain a compliance program.
  • Understand the purpose of USP 800 and how to ensure your teams have the tools they need to identify and safely handle hazardous drugs.

Casey Halcrow has spent the last decade working in leadership positions in retail, discharge, and long-term care pharmacies. He currently works for Guardian Pharmacy of Minnesota as the Director of Operations. He served on the national USP 800 task force for Guardian Pharmacy in 2019 and, if it can be said that one can be passionate about policy implementation, he is. Since joining the Guardian team in 2017, Casey feels like he has found a true home in the long-term care industry and has enjoyed settling into the family of facilities, nurses, and colleagues with whom he works. Casey lives with his wife and two young (obviously adorable) children in the Twin Cities and is looking forward to continuing to grow with Guardian in the years to come.
